The Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs is delighted by the response to their Trelawny Challenge, where people across Cornwall were asked to sing Trelawny simultaneously for Children in Need. By Friday 16 November the Federation's singing challenge to Cornwall had raised £11,036.00.

We have received so many kind messages which have demonstrated the enthusiasm felt for this event. Many people sent in anonymous donations - a big thanks to all of you!

Federation Male Voice Choirs, mixed choirs, ladies choirs and other groups of singers, led the singing in venues across Cornwall. Pubs, clubs and societies hosted these gatherings, many without the assistance of a group of singers.

Private groups and individuals sang along with the radio and sent in their donations. People interrupted their evening, turned on the radio, and sang Trelawny! Some were at dinner parties, others in choir practice, amateur dramatic group rehearsal, alone or in small family groups in their kitchen or living room - some people pulled over into a car park to sing, while many Cornish people away from home, listened on the internet and sang along with us all!

There were groups holding a special evening on behalf of other charities, who stopped what they were doing at 9.30 pm and sang Trelawny together, generously making a separate collection for Children in Need. A double charity event!

Some pubs put on extras, such as making pasties to sell or holding a raffle. And the male voice choirs were innovative too - one group, after the singing of Trelawny continued the evening by being a kind of 'male voice juke-box', singing requests from people, and charging them £1 a song, all towards Children in Need!

Thanks so much for the wonderful effort made by all. The event was sponsored by St Austell Brewery and greatly assisted by BBC Radio Cornwall, in particular Duncan Warren and Joy Robinson.

And next year? ... Can we find the 'twenty thousand Cornishmen and women' and reach that target figure of £20,000?!!

THE TRELAWNY CHALLENGE

The Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs laid down a challenge to the people of Cornwall in aid of Children in Need – to have 20,000 Cornishmen and women all singing the Cornish anthem ‘Trelawny’ at the same time. The plan was to fill the Duchy with song on the evening of November 9 - the Friday preceding Children in Need night, and what a success it was!

The event was supported by St Austell Brewery and took place in participating pubs and venues up and down the county, including various private functions and small family gatherings. Everyone was enjoying an evening of singing, many led by members of local male voice choirs, various other singing groups and just enthusiastic non-singers! Participants paid at least £1 each, the money going to Children in Need. The climax of the event was the synchronised singing of ‘Trelawny’, also known as ‘The Song of the Western Men’ at 9.30pm on Radio Cornwall. Duncan Warren of Radio Cornwall gave the countdown to the start time, then Cornwall joined in and sang the Cornish anthem, TRELAWNY!
