FEDERATION AWARDS LONG SERVICE CERTIFICATE
Peter Mason of Praze-Hayle Male Choir was presented with a Federation Long Service Award in appreciation of over 40 years service to Cornish male voice singing. The presentation was made by Hamilton Hawkins of Praze-Hayle MC on behalf of the Federation, on Sunday 4 March when the Choir gave a concert at the Methodist chapel in Hayle.
Sent by Hamilton Hawkins, Praze-Hayle MCOPEN PRACTICE NIGHT
with NEWLYN MC on MONDAY 7 JANUARY 2008
NEWLYN MALE CHOIR will be starting the New Year with an open practice night. This will be held in the Newlyn Centre, Newlyn, Penzance on Monday 7th January, commencing at 7.30pm. Any men who may be interested in singing, or want to know what Male Voice Choirs are all about would be made most welcome.
You do not have to be an expert, or be able to 'read music' as they say; just have a reasonable voice and be able to hold a tune. If you are not sure about your voice range, ie Tenor, 2nd Tenor, Baritone, or Bass, our Musical Director will be able to advise you. We have a first class Musical Director who has spent his life teaching music and voice, and is prepared to give individual time to assist any budding member.
The evening will not only be a practice night, but an opportunity for you to meet and talk to choir members, and for us to answer your questions. Light refreshments will be available.
It is possible you would be interested but unable to come along that evening. Don't worry. You can come along to any practice night held on Mondays in the Seamans Mission, Newlyn, (Upstairs in the Chapel) at 7.30pm. Singing in a Male Voice Choir is an enjoyable and interesting pastime, and it dosen't take up too much of your time. Practice generally once a week, and most concert commitments are on a Sunday evening. There are the odd midweek ones but their acceptances depend on how many of the choir are available.
We take singing seriously and work hard at it but there is always plenty of humour flying around when we meet, and there are also social occasions. Generally we try and arrange a weekend trip away somewhere every one or two years. This year we went to the Exeter area and performed two concerts, helping to raise over £800 at one for the local Cancer group. The other, jointly with a host choir Budleigh Salterton, helping to raise over a £1,000 towards a new Church Organ at Topsham.
The Newlyn Choir is one of the oldest in Cornwall, being formed in 1921. We have taken part in a number of the Cornwall Championships over the years and were very successful, our name being on several of the Trophies. We have made trips abroad, not only to England and Wales but also to represent our Town at Festivals in France. Two quite memorable occasions were performing lunch time recitals in Westminster Abbey and Chichester Cathedral. We also of course took part in the Cornish Federation mass Male Voice Choir Concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Any men reading this who may be interested, come along and meet us on the 7th January. Any Male Voice Choir members up the line who may have friends or relatives down this way who may be interested in joining a choir, please give them a nudge in our direction! Hope to see you there.

AN INVITATION TO FEDERATION CHOIR MEMBERS
(You must register by Friday, 4th January, 2008)
![]() |
On Saturday, 17th May 2008, Penzance Choral Society will perform Mendelssohn's Elijah as the first event of a year long season of concerts to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the choir's founding in 1858. The leading soloist will be Alan Opie, the Cornish born bass-baritone who has become internationally famous for opera and concert performances and, early in his career, sang in the ranks of a Cornish male voice choir. For this special occasion, Penzance Choral Society would be pleased to offer temporary membership to any singer from Federation choirs who wishes to take this exciting opportunity of joining a big chorus with professional soloists and a supporting full orchestra. Penzance Choral Society is conducted by Timothy Hosken, the Musical Director of Marazion Apollo Male Choir and has among its 70+ regular choir members singers from Mousehole Male Voice Choir, Newlyn Male Choir, as well as those from the Apollo. |
Rehearsals are on Friday evenings, from 7.30pm to 9.15pm, and take place in the Humphry Davy School, Penzance. Registration for the first of 20 rehearsals will be on Friday, 4th January, 2008 and you will be required to attend 16 of them. A copy of the Elijah score will be loaned to you on registration. Whilst it is an advantage to read music, there are home rehearsal tapes available which will enable you to become note perfect learning by rote.
There is a fee of £20 for temporary membership which covers all 20 rehearsals, the concert and the loan of a score. The hire of a home rehearsal tape, if required, is extra.

60th ANNIVERSARY for ST STYTHIANS MVC
| St Stythians Male Voice Choir's 60th Anniversary Year celebrations started in earnest with a Dinner at the Green Lawns Hotel, Falmouth on Saturday 24th February. Choir members, families and guests made a gathering of 144 people. This may be a record. Special guests were Angela Thomas and Alison Harvey, who frequently sing as soloists with the choir, and David and Gill Peters. David Peters was the guest speaker and entertained the diners with stories drawn from his long and varied experience of choral singing in Cornwall. He is the current Chairman of the Board of the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival and he has a long experience of singing in Cornwall, starting with Treverva MVC in the Edgar Kessell days. Awards for 40 years service were presented to Desmond Barrett, Adrian Rowe and Ken Downing. A presentation was made to Musical Director, Ken Downing, to mark his 20 years in the post. A celebration birthday cake, complete with Choir logo, was donated by W C Rowe (Falmouth) Ltd. The Choir then sang four songs, including the first airing of the specially commissioned piece, Congratulations (Alan Simmons). | ![]() Photo of St Stythians MVC in 1949 |

TAMARY VALLEY MVC ENTERS ITS SECOND YEAR
It seems remarkable to think that the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir is already one year old. It celebrated its first anniversary at the beginning of May by singing at Launceston Methodist Church as part of the Cornwall International Male Voice Festival and with a small party at its ‘headquarters’ in Kelly Bray where Justin Leigh (the choir’s Vice-President) helped Director of Music, Rosemary Cole, and Chairman, Charles Westlake, to cut the birthday cake. It is not seen to be the done thing these days, but the choir is immensely proud of what it has achieved in its first year. It has grown from 11 members to 27, has presented 19 concerts (on both sides of the Tamar) and has appeared on both Radio Cornwall and Westcountry TV.
The choir commences its second year with its First Annual Gala Concert on June 9th at 7.30pm in Callington Town Hall. The evening will be compered by Justin Leigh. Guest artists are Jackie and Ivor Lander, the choir’s guests at their very first full-scale concert, and the newly formed Firefly Barbershop Harmony Chorus from St Austell. The choir has recently been awarded an ‘Awards for All’ Lottery grant which, together with grants from Caradon District Council and West Devon Borough Council, has enabled the purchase of an electronic piano and other equipment. This will have its first official outing at the Gala concert.
Celebrations continue on June 16th when TVMVC perform in concert with Stithians Ladies Choir at 7.30pm at Saltash Wesley. With Phil Taylor guesting on the organ and Radio Cornwall’s Janette Eathorne as compere, this promises to be an evening with something for everyone.

ST STYTHIANS MVC TOUR OF NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE
|
The St Stythians Male Voice Choir has just returned from a 4-day, 2-concert tour of North Staffordshire as part of its 60th Anniversary Year celebrations. Our hosts were the 70-strong Audley MVC from the village of Audley, Staffs, near the Cheshire border. This was a return trip following the visit of Audley MVC to Cornwall in 2005. We stayed near Stoke in the Potteries, expecting to be surrounded by chimneys and mine tips - but in fact we stayed amidst green fields, oak trees, sheep and lambs. |

85th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT AND FAREWELL BY ST DENNIS MALE VOICE CHOIR
To mark the Choir's 85th Anniversary St Dennis Male Voice Choir are holding their Anniversary Concert in Hendra Road Chapel, with Alison Harvey, on Sunday December 16th at 2.30 p.m.
Clive Jago, Secretary of the Choir spoke for his colleagues saying "We hope that all those who have been associated with the Choir will try and be with us at our Anniversary and Farewell Concert".

ST DENNIS MALE VOICE CHOIR TO CLOSE AFTER 85 YEARS St Dennis Male Voice Choir was formed in 1922 with Marsh Kessell as the first Musical Director. Upon his retirement Captain Hedley Martin took over until the outbreak of Word War II forced the choir to disband. The choir was reformed in 1946 after the war by Stanley Treloar, whose son Harold took over as Musical Director. From the late 1950s a new approach to the choir's repertoire was adopted under the guidance of Harold Treloar, introducing individual arrangements of music from shows and even current pop songs of the day. This brought an entirely different style and change from the traditional male voice programme. The Choir has broadcast on both radio and television and has made 3 recordings. As a concert choir, a considerable amount of money has been raised for charity in its 85 years of existence. St Dennis MVC has enjoyed notable successes at festivals and championships. Twice winners of the West of England Championships at Bournmouth; Winners at the South West Championships at Paignton; Winners at the Cornwall Music Festival; Second place in the International Eisteddfod at Llangollen in the advanced choirs section. The Choir has been invited to sing at many major festivals in Cornwall and also took part in exchanges with male voice choirs from other areas such as Honley from Yorkshire and Dursley in Gloucestershire - often miles from home making music for the enjoyment of themselves and a variety of audiences. |

The Cornish Federation's first Associate Members, The Maesteg Gleemen Male Voice Choir will be entertaining the West Midlands fans of Wolves and Leicester City on the 22nd December prior to their match at Molineux. The game marks the annual WolvesAID Charity event, which is being broadcast ‘LIVE’ on Sky Sports 1 with a 5.20pm Kick-Off. The choir will be performing Christmas Carols prior to Kick-Off and at Half-Time.
Following a meeting at an untimely hotel fire evacuation with Mick McCarthy, Manager of Wolves, in London last December, Choir Secretary Richard Howells has kept in contact, not only with the management team but also with Racheal Heyhoe-Flint MBE, the former England Ladies' Cricket Captain and now Vice-President of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.
Richard recently received a mobile telephone text message from Ms Heyhoe-Flint enquiring as to the Choir's whereabouts on the Saturday prior to Christmas ~ 22 December. The rest is history! It will be the first time the ‘Gleemen’ have performed prior to a football match - however, they are not averse to performing in front of large crowds, having led the singing at Murrayfield in 2003 and 2005 prior to the bi-annual six nations fixture between Scotland and Wales.
Richard added: “it was a real surprise to receive such a request, an early Christmas present for the Choir. I had been in contact with Racheal recently following Wolves’ visit to Ninian Park when they pinched 3 points off Cardiff City following their 3-2 win, but not for one moment did I expect this. Everyone is looking forward to what is going to be yet another ‘first’ for the Maesteg Gleemen. All I hope is the weather will be kind to us and Wolves come away with a victory. Who knows? We may be invited back!”

LATEST ON TEMPORARY EVENT NOTICES - PUBLIC CONSULTATION INVITED
on Guidance to Local Councils when interpreting LICENSING ACT 2003
Colin Breed MP (South East Cornwall), in response to our complaints about Temporary Event Notices, has sent a copy of a letter received from Shaun Woodward MP, Minister for Creative Industries and Tourism. Although he does not comment on our specific events, the Minister says he feels it is up to the local councils to interpret the regulations. He also mentions that certain local authorities have licensed their public open spaces to enable a variety of events to take place on them without the need for a separate licence. Choirs may wish to make enquiries of their local authority to see if there are any such licensed public open spaces in their area.
Public consultation is now open - closing date for responses is 11 April
The Minister's letter also states: "As part of our monitoring and evaluation of the Licensing Act 2003 we are reviewing the Guidance issued to Licensing Authorities on the discharge of their functions under the Act. On 16 January we began a public consultation on our proposed revisions to this Guidance which includes further draft guidance on "incidental music". The public consultation lasts for 12 weeks and the closing date for responses is 11 April. The responses will inform the final version of our Guidance which we expect to issue in spring 2007. Further details, including a consultation document and draft revised Guidance, are available on the DCMS website: www.culture.gov.uk/Reference_library/Consultations/2007_current_consultations/section_182_licensing_consultation.htm."
Register of Local Authority Licensed Public Spaces in England and Wales
The Minister's letter continues: "Finally, you may be interested to learn that the Department published a Register of Local Authority Licensed Public Spaces in England and Wales on 15 January. The register lists those local authorities that have licensed their public spaces to enable a range of events to take place throughout the year. It will help event organisers and entertainers to determine whether licensable activities can take place in a particular location without the need to obtain a separate premises licence, or to give a temporary event notice. Further details of the Register are available from: http://www.culture.gov.uk/what_we_do/Alcohol_entertainment/licensed_public_spaces2.htm."
If you would like to have a copy of the Minister's letter, please let me know. My contact details are at the top of this page.

As reported in the West Briton on 4 January, Callington Town Band has done a deal with their Local Authority regarding Temporary Event Notices. Apparently they will still have to send in the Temporary Event Notice as required by law, but Caradon has waived the fee.
St Columba Male Voice Choir has approached Padstow Town Council to ask them to license their quay as "premises" to save the Choir - and all who use it through the summer to raise money for charity - from having to apply for and pay £21 for each Notice. St Columba MVC is planning a special event in Perranporth this summer and will have to apply for a TEN for this. It would seem a good idea for choirs to approach their local council to try to negotiate the waiving of the fee for a TEN before summer concerts, raising funds for charity, take place.

"Situated at the heart of the village, the Obertrauner Hof epitomises the spirit of Austria. The family friendly hotel opens its doors to the young and old alike with the warmth of a home away from home. Many of the 12 spacious en-suite rooms have balconies opening out to breath-taking panoramic views of the Dachstein Massif.

LOVENY GROWS FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
Loveny Male Voice Choir feel they should point out an error in the latest edition of the National Association of Choirs' Yearbook, where they are listed as a Category 3 choir (indicating a membership of 50-79). Unfortunately this is no longer the case, as the choir currently has a membership of 34 singers.
Under the direction of new Musical Director, Dorothy Andrews, Loveny MVC is now enjoying a steady rise in numbers, having suffered a low period earlier in the year prior to her appointment. Recently Loveny has recruited 10 more men, and has every expectation of continuing to attract more choristers to the Choir, both established singers and new recruits.
Jack Roberts, Choir Secretary, comments: "At each rehearsal, we are now growing accustomed to cheerily welcoming new members." The choir believes they will soon have a membership in the region of 40 singers.

CHANGES AT ST COLUMBA MVC
St Columba Male Voice Choir has gone from an enviable three accompanists down to one. Pam Finlay, who had been with the choir for a relatively short time, has left for personal reasons and this has also meant the choir loses Peter, her husband who was a valuable addition to the Baritone section. Sorry you've gone Pam and Peter - St Columba shall miss you both!
Lilah Bassett, who has been the main accompanist through thick and thin since 1992, has indicated she would like to retire. The choir is of course very sad to lose such an old friend. All the "boys" wish her well and will miss her although she will keep in touch - and of course, she will be granted Life Membership of the choir. Now the choir's sole accompanist is Margaret Callaway, who has been with them for a little over a year and has settled in well. St Columba choir is delighted she has joined them.

CHARLES WESLEY'S 300th ANNIVERSARY
JOIN IN and SING at ST PETROC'S, BODMIN on SUNDAY 14 OCTOBER at 6 pm
This year is the 300th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Wesley. To mark the occasion, Bodmin Methodists have arranged a special Songs of Praise, featuring some of his greatest and most popular Hymns. So an invitation is extended to anyone who enjoys a good sing, who would relish once again the experience of singing great hymns in a huge congregation in Cornwall’s largest Parish Church, to come along to St. Petroc’s, Bodmin, on Sunday 14th October at 6.00pm.
For those who are not familiar with Bodmin, there is ample parking in the Priory Car Park (follow the signs) and from there it is a very short walk to the Church. Come and join in - it would be wonderful to have a full Church!
This will be ‘congregational’ singing, but anyone who can harmonise will certainly add to the pleasure. The main thing is to celebrate Charles’s Anniversary by singing a selection of his wonderful Hymns, to enjoy singing them, and in doing so, reflect that probably the male voice choir tradition grew from the Wesley’s use of song in their Ministry.
Now, when you think of hymn-writers, the name of Charles Wesley is bound to feature - he literally wrote thousands of them. It is accepted by all, I think, that without his hymns, his brother John might not have had the success he had in setting up Methodism - even then, folk liked to sing. I read once that Methodism, in it’s simplest definition, was a Choir formed by John to sing the hymns of Charles, and to live accordingly. Any choir sings best when it sings a tune it enjoys, and it just seems that any Charles Wesley Hymn which has survived into the Hymn-books has proved to be a favourite of many, and in fact his “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” has often been said to be the finest Hymn in the English language!
None of us are in a Choir unless we really enjoy singing. And for most of us, probably the first stirrings of this enjoyment was in a Church or Chapel or Sunday School - who can ever forget the rousing, ‘singable’ choruses with which we would enthusiastically try and raise the rafters? Even better with actions! On those special occasions, when a Chapel would be filled beyond capacity, with the condensation streaming down the walls, perspiration on everyone’s brow, the hymn singing would be such that each one of us would feel Pavarotti-like, convinced that unless we each gave our ‘all’ there would be no point in it at all. So we all filled our lungs, strained our vocal chords, and laid down the foundations of a love of singing which can never be lost.
Of course, just any old Hymn would not be enough - the words had to mean something, and the tune had to be ‘just right.’ Happily, it seemed that the best hymns just attracted the best tunes, and although our singing repertoire may now be more expansive, more diverse, more varied in content and style, we still return from time to time to the great Hymns of yore, and find we still enjoy singing them.
Incidentally, John Wesley, who had a ‘method’ for everything, laid down rules of singing, which many of our Musical Directors would not argue with, and which are:-
“Learn the tune.
Sing them as they are printed.
Sing all. “If it is a cross to you, take it up and you will find a blessing.”
Sing lustily and with a good courage.
Sing modestly. Do not bawl.
Sing in time. Do not run before or stay behind.
Above all, sing spiritually.”

LOCAL BOY JETHRO IS CHOIR'S GUEST CHAIRMAN
Sunday 1st July is a special day for St Buryan Male Voice Choir in more ways than one. Not only is it their first Annual Concert since Musical Director Portia Grant took over the baton at the beginning of the year, but they are delighted to announce that their special Guest Chairman for the concert is none other than Cornwall’s favourite entertainer, Jethro.
Jethro and his brothers were St Buryan boys and several of their close friends from the early days are still members of the Choir. But the connections are much closer than that. Jethro’s father, Hugh Rowe, was the Choir’s first Conductor when it was formed in 1941, with the aim of raising money to send Red Cross parcels to the soldiers fighting in the second world war.
In January this year Portia Grant took over Musical Director duties from Elizabeth Stubbings, who had retired after 21 years in charge. Portia has led the choir at 2 concerts so far, the first with 3 other choirs at Richmond Chapel as part of the recent International Festival, and more recently at Carbis Bay Methodist Church. The Choir’s performances, in which they are accompanied by Mr Norman Bunney, have been extremely well received and they are working hard to ensure that their Annual Concert will provide a fitting ‘welcome back to Buryan’ for Jethro. They are also delighted to welcome Catherine Pearce (Soprano) and the Choir's President Diana Ford (Pianoforte) as guest soloists in what promises to be a memorable evening.
With the kind permission of the Rector and Churchwardens, the Concert is being held on Sunday 1 July in St Buryan Church, starting at 7.45pm. Admission is £3 and £1 for under-16s. The music and ‘chewing over of old times’ will undoubtedly continue in the local hostelry after the concert!

MEVAGISSEY MALE CHOIR appoints ANGELA RENSHAW as ASSISTANT MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Angela Renshaw hails from Leicestershire and has not been in Cornwall very long but has a thorough background of music and choirs. Before coming to the County Angela was heavily involved with both Junior and Youth Choirs and has a firm grounding in choral work, both as a conductor in her own right and as an organiser. Although this is her first venture with a Male Choir she has already shown that the prospect of conducting one of Cornwall’s largest choirs has not daunted her! In addition, Angela is associated with Truro Cathedral Choir and helps run Choral Workshops both in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. She is also involved with Outreach projects within the County. Her CV is impressive and Mevagissey Male Choir is delighted to appoint her as Assistant Musical Director, being sure that she will prove to be a more than capable asset to the choir. Mevagissey MC wishes her a long and enjoyable stay with them.

TEMPORARY EVENT NOTICES -
RADIO CORNWALL airs protests from Choirs and Bands
The protests of male voice choirs and bands were heard on Radio Cornwall last weekend, arguing forcibly against the imposition of a payment of £21 for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) every time a group wants to perform outdoors in an area not normally licensed. This situation soon arises for bands who frequently perform on the streets as Christmas approaches. Some of our choirs also perform around their town or village, singing carols at Christmas time. According to the new law, religious services are exempt from the need for a TEN and some local authorities have stated that singing only carols could constitute a religious service, but secular songs, such as The Holly and the Ivy, will change the nature of the concert and a TEN will legally be required! Choirs should contact their own local authority for advice.
The Federation has supported the protests of its members and written to each of Cornwall's MPs, setting out our objections and strongly urging them to seek an amendment to the law on our behalf.
If you have any experiences or comments regarding the Temporary Event Notice, please contact the Federation Secretary, Linda Jones (contact details above) and they may be posted on this news page to share with others.
See earlier items about TENs on this page, below, dated 1 August and 25 August.
The Federation advises members to contact their local authority before undertaking any outdoor concerts.

CHOIR SEEKS ANCESTORS
Genealogy is very much the fashion at present but a recently formed male voice choir is adding a new dimension to this interest in finding out about one’s predecessors. The Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir, just six months old, is seeking any information about those who sang in a similar Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir formed about sixty years ago under the musical direction of Mr Wilfred Leverton. Did you sing in this choir, or do you know someone who did? If so, please contact Jim Christophers on 01822 612140.

CHOIR MEMBERS' VIEWS ON THE FEDERATION CONCERT in aid of CORNISH HOSPICES
Contact the Secretary if you would like to add your comments about the Federation Concert in aid of Hospices held on 23 September.
"It was a real joy to sing to a sell-out audience - and for a good cause. We were proud to have participated and to more than fill the second row."
David Hutson, St Stythians Male Voice Choir.
Message posted 28/09/2006
"We enjoyed the evening and thought that there was that special 'buzz' which lifted the performance of the singers. From comments we have received, the audience certainly enjoyed it.
"The organisation was good, although I for one would have preferred the choirs to re-enter more formally after the interval.
"The only slight criticism is that the programme was a bit predictable - singing all the old male voice choir standards. Whilst this may have fulfilled the expectations of many of the audience, it would have been nicer to have sung a different programme with more modern music, just to show how really good we all are at learning and singing. As an example, American Trilogy is a 'wow' and is usually followed by a slight hushed silence after we have sung it - this was so at the Hall for Cornwall too. Perhaps next time, if we do it again ... ?
"Well done to all who organised the event. Well done to the singers, the musical directors and accompanists and 'thank you' to the staff of the Hall for Cornwall. It was lovely to see the Hall full!"
Steve Burstow, St Columba Celtic Male Voice Choir

FEDERATION CONCERT in aid of CORNISH HOSPICES - A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
| ![]() |

The Federation massed choir concert was given in aid of Cornish Hospices at the Hall for Cornwall on Saturday evening, 23 September. Around 200 men, representing 11 choirs, sang to a full house, delighting the audience with a beautiful programme of music. A fitting climax was the rendition of Trelawny when all the audience stood and joined in. The atmosphere was electric!
Guest artistes were the South West Tuba Quartet who gave a varied and interesting programme of musical pieces.
As yet we do not know how much the event has raised for the Cornish Hospices, so watch this space - you will be notified as soon as we have the information. However, we do know that over £1,200 was raised from the collection boxes and programme sales.
Many thanks to all those who took part, who worked hard to organise the event and gave freely of their time.

TEMPORARY EVENT NOTICES (TENs)
The matter of Temporary Event Notices (TENs) arose at the recent Federation meeting. The Licensing Act 2003 came into effect in November 2005. Its stated aim is to simplify the licensing system, these now being given by the local authority, not magistrates. Male voice choirs will need a TEN when not performing in licensed premises. TENs cover various events and include 'performances of live music', typically those given outdoors. It costs £21 per TEN and you will need to apply for a TEN for each performance not given in a licensed premises. There is a limit on the number of TENs given for the same venue each year and you need to apply for each Licence in advance of an event (at least 2 weeks I believe, but please check this). The Federation advises choirs to take advice from their local authorities. Those that have already done so have found them to be helpful. It is wise not to ignore this however, as heavy fines can apply if the new law is not observed.
Understandably many choirs are annoyed by this new law. They work voluntarily to raise funds for many charities and object to seeing such a large proportion of it taken away by government. I have received a few emails from choir members about this and am aware that feelings are strong. After contacting the National Choir Association I received a full and interesting reply. If you would like me to forward this to you, please get in touch with me, the Federation Secretary, Linda Jones (contact details above). However, the same advice is given by the National Association of Choirs, namely to contact your local authority. The law has changed and may affect your summer concerts this year.
DISCLAIMER: The above information should not be interpreted as a formal legal opinion. It represents the lay views of the Federation Committee based on the information researched by them.

RAME PENINSULA MVC Tour to Spain, September 2006
Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir made their first visit to Spain a memorable one. The choir was based in Torrevieja, a town with a population of 96,000 people including many retired UK residents, and famous for its production of salt.
The first concert was held in the Virgin del Carmen, a purpose built modern music hall which impressed the visiting choir and their supporters. This was a joint concert with the Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers. The Rame Choir led by Musical Director Brian Oates and Accompanist Liz Sidebotham opened their programme with the Cole Porter Medley, and the Harmonisers with 'There’s no business like show business’. The audience was entertained and impressed by both choirs and showed its appreciation by demanding a double encore. Mid-week the Rame party took in a tour of the mountainous area behind Torrevieja and the picturesque village of Guadalest, a must for visitors to the Costa Blanca.
The second and final concert took place at the Palacio de Musica, another purpose built entertainment centre. This joint concert was shared by the mixed choir ‘Crescendo’ and they started their programme with a beautiful rendition of ‘Huellas en a Arena (‘Footprints in the sand’) a Spanish love song, and completed their evening with ‘Swinging with the Saints’. The Rame Choir were on good form and impressed the audience with excellent renditions of ‘Calm is the Sea’, ‘Let their be Light’ and Ol Man River’ amongst many others. For the finale both choirs sang ‘Speed Your Journey’ and the evergreen ‘Rhythm of Life’. A presentation was made to the Rame Choir from the people of Torrevieja in the form of a model boat in a glass case, as a keepsake of their debut visit to the town.
Concerts raise funds in aid of Alzheimers Research. Both concerts raised funds in excess of 2000 euros for the relief of Alzheimer sufferers.
Chris Ford, a former member and past chairman of the Rame Choir, and recently living close to Torrevieja, died in a local hospital shortly after the choir returned to Cornwall. A memorial service for him will be held in the Cornerstone Church, Torpoint, on Tuesday November 14th at 11.00am.

NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR FOR IMERYS ENGINEERING MVC
Barry Hawken is the new Musical Director for Imerys Engineering Male Voice Choir. Born and brought up in the small village of Whitemoor, which lies on the edge of 'China Clay Country', Barry has taken an active part in music from an early age. His involvement with music was initially with brass bands and he considers himself extremely fortunate to have been a member of the St Dennis Youth and Senior Bands under the direction of the late Eddie Williams - a period when the Youth Band were unbeaten in the South West and held the title of 'National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain'.
Barry's involvement with choral music began in his mid-twenties when he was asked to lead the singing for a musical production at his local Methodist Church, there following a series of hugely successful annual Musicals which packed the Chapel to capacity night after night. From the cast of these Musicals, Barry formed the mixed-voice Choir, Halwyn-a-gan, which draws on the talents of singers from throughout the Mid-Cornwall area and which he continues to conduct.
Active and energetic in the promotion of choral music, Barry has been heavily involved in encouraging young people to take up singing and has recently been working with the Foundation for Youth Music in local schools and currently has a group of 30 young people who meet on a weekly basis in order to develop their singing potential.
Imerys Engineering Male Voice Choir is delighted to have acquired the services of their accomplished new Musical Director. Barry Hawken looks forward to working with the choir and building upon its present position.

NEW ACCOMPANIST for MOUSEHOLE MVC
| Mousehole Male Voice Choir has been very fortunate in securing the services of Annette Turton as their new Accompanist. This appointment comes after the retirement of John Harry, who has provided tremendous support to the choir for over 21 years. John will continue to make occasional guest appearances where both piano and organ accompaniment is required, but the major work load will now be undertaken by Annette. Annette Turton has been accompanying most of her life - in the early years of her career playing with cellist Julian Lloyd Webber and other well known musicians. Her late husband was the eminent violinist and conductor, Peter Turton. They met when playing the Grieg Piano Concerto and enjoyed a joint musical career, as well as a family of 4 children, all of whom are themselves musical. Annette now enjoys accompanying her cellist son, Toby in concerts. |

Annette is looking forward to accompanying the power of the 60-strong male voice choir. It is very much a case of being pitched in at the deep end as the choir has a busy programme in the months ahead, with new pieces in preparation for the Mid-Summer Concert in Paul Church on Sunday 25 June, the Summer Festival Concert in St Mary's Parish Church on Sunday 6 August and the Paul Feast Concert on Sunday 8 October. In between are a series of outdoor concerts on Mousehole Quay and beyond that, the choir has engagements booked into 2009, their centenary year.
In addition to the appointment with Mousehole Male Voice Choir, Annette also works as the organist at St Peter's Church, Newlyn and is the accompanist for the St Just Violin Group. Busy lady!

CHOIR SAVES THE DAY WITH A SANKEY HYMN
Last Wednesday at 9.30 am, Secretary of St Stythians Male Voice Choir, David Hutson, received an unexpected phone call from Wrexham in North Wales. Someone from that town had been seeking a version of a much beloved family ‘Sankey’ hymn ‘At the Cross’ to be played at her Mother’s funeral on the following day. She eventually discovered, via an internet search and the Choir’s website, that the Stithians Male Voice and Ladies Choirs had recorded this hymn in 1974 on the first of their 5 Sankey collections. The Secretary was unable to help – not having a copy of the recording to hand and knowing of no outlets in Wrexham or Chester that sell it. Considering that this was a lost cause, he nevertheless emailed the Choir’s CD/tape Sales Manager, John Musgrave, with the story. On his return from work, John picked up the message, found the hymn, made an MP3 version and emailed it to Wrexham. At 9.30 pm he learned that it had arrived in playable form – a very satisfying outcome and a tribute to modern communications.
The Stithians Choirs recorded a total of 73 Sankey hymns between 1974 and 1992 in 5 collections. Now re-mastered and produced as CDs and being one of the best collections available, they create interest as far afield as the USA and Australia. The Choirs do not often now perform Sankey Hymns live but following a successful Sankey concert in January 2006, they have agreed to hold another Sankey evening at Stithians Methodist Church on Sunday 28th January 2007. The Stithians Ladies Choir celebrated their 40th Anniversary in 2006 and the Male Voice Choir celebrates its 60th Anniversary in 2007.Sent by David Hutson, St Stythians MVC

CONCERT RAISES FUNDS FOR CHILDREN'S HOSPICE SOUTH WEST
On Saturday 29 July 2006, St Columba Celtic Male Voice Choir gave a special concert in aid of the Children's Hospice South West, the charity the choir has chosen to support this year. The concert was led by Musical Director, Tony Tournoff and supported by soloist Rebecca Jelbert and accompanists, Lilah Basset and Margaret Callaway. It was organised by the Wadebridge support branch of the charity and was instigated and supported by choir member Phil May and his wife Angela. A special surprise for Mary Murfin, the tireless organiser of Children's Hospice SW, was the presentation of a cheque for £1000 to the charity by Rex Trenouth, the choir's Treasurer. The Chairman, Ken Nicholls, explained that this was the first donation of the year to the choir's chosen charity. "Last year we gave £3000 to Mount Edgcumbe Hospice and we hope to better that this year."

WELSH MALE VOICE CHOIR VISIT TO CORNWALL IN OCTOBER
Pelenna Valley Male Voice Choir is based in the small village of Tonmawr in South Wales. The choir would like to arrange a concert in Cornwall at the end of October this year, with a Cornish choir of similar size.
Pelenna Valley MVC consists of 34 members and are well known for their work in assisting local charities. Their spokesman, Trevor Williams, says their last tour was to Barcelona where they were invited to sing in the Marian Devotion in the Basilica at Montserrat - apparently the only male voice choir ever to have done so. They have also performed with Katherine Jenkins in a concert last year, so, Trevor modestly claims, '... we're not too bad and won't let anyone down.'! Trevor also says the singers are a very sociable bunch who enjoy a good afterglow. They have a varied repertoire which can be selected for any type of venue. If any Cornish choir would like to become involved, then Pelenna Valley MVC could reciprocate with a visit to their own area next year, if desired.
If your choir is interested, please contact Trevor Williams on (01639) 637480.

SINGING ABOUT ON THE RIVER
It is said that the sun always shines in the West Country, but much of it falls in liquid form. The recently formed Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir certainly basked in copious amounts of 'liquid sunshine' on Saturday 29 July when they took to the water to introduce a large group of friends and supporters to the area from which they have taken their name. The inclement weather certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the party as they cruised from Plymouth to Calstock via Saltash. The river affords very different views of well known places with particular interest being taken in Devonport Dockyard, the Albert and Tamar bridges, Cothele Quay and of course, Calstock itself with its imposing viaduct.
Having taken full advantage of the hospitality available in the Tamar Inn, the group set sail for the return journey in clearing weather. With the light fading, the passengers were vigorously entertained with some lusty informal singing of well known songs led by members of the choir. And so, a good time was had by all without a hint of sunburn in sight.
Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir is our newest member choir, having been formed earlier this year. (See News Item of 24 July). Look up their concert programme, and the programmes of all our member choirs, by clicking onto Future Concerts, and for further details about all member choirs see Member Choirs.

TAMAR VALLEY MALE VOICE CHOIR
JOINS THE FEDERATION

A new male voice choir has been formed to entertain people on both sides of the Tamar River. The Federation extends a warm welcome to new member choir, the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir.
The choir was established on 9 May and nearly seven weeks later were ready to make their first public performance. The choir in the main are formed by Cornishmen, but three members are from Kingsbridge, Devon, as is Rosemary Cole, the Director of Music.
The choir's first outing was in support of a 'Songs of Praise' at Chillington Methodist Church, near Kingsbridge. The occasion was well supported by the community with approximately 100 people in attendance. The congregation was rapturous in its praise for the quality of the choir's performance and it is hoped that this will become an annual fixture. The choir is already planning several concerts in and around Cornwall and Devon. For instance a concert is being planned for Tavistock on 16 September in aid of the Santa Rosa Fund and on the 13 October 2006 at Kingsbridge they will be sharing the stage with Richard Stilgoe.
The choir meets at the Primary School in Callington every Tuesday evening at 7.30 pm and are delighted at being based there. Men who enjoy singing and the fellowship of male company, are very welcome - car sharing is in operation. The choir is looking for bass or tenor voices, and anything in between! The choir also has a ladies' support group who are actively fund raising to get the choir on a firm financial footing.
More information about the choir regarding membership, the ladies' support group, concerts and bookings can be obtained by telephoning Peter Bolt on (01548) 852529 or by email: peterbolt@talktalk.net.

MOVING FAREWELL CONCERT GIVEN AT BODMIN METHODIST CHURCH
|
The last ever concert held in Bodmin Methodist Church was given by Loveny Male Voice Choir on 22 June. Methodism first really struck Bodmin when, in 1743, none other than John Wesley himself visited the town. A Society soon sprung up, which culminated in the building of the magnificent Church in Fore Street in 1839/40. Sadly, after over a century and a half of Christian Witness, the Church building is to be sold off, and the congregation will relocate to a more modern building. To mark the demise of such a grand concert venue, the Loveny Choir (St Neot) sang a last ever Grand Concert in the Church on Thursday 22 June, chaired by the ever popular Ray Shaddick. In the absence of Loveny's newly appointed Musical Director, Dorothy Andrews, the Choir was conducted by founder member, Colin Arthur. The event had obviously captured the imagination of the public, for the Church was filled to capacity - and perhaps beyond, and in such circumstance, the Choir 'sang its boots off', as any choir would have done. |
As it was such a momentous occasion, Loveny had extended an invitation to other choristers who wished to feel part of the occasion, to join them in the final section of songs, and over 20 men did so, turning up in their own uniforms as suggested. Among them were men from Pelynt, Launceston, St Columb and perhaps Wadebridge and Tintagel as well. Indeed, perhaps most male choirs were represented by the presence of Terry Hodge, Chairman of our Federation!
And so an augmented choir of over 50 sang the evening out with a thrilling selection including, of course, Morte Criste and Llanfair, all sung with great emotion and passion. Truly, all those who had gone before us, would have been proud of the farewell the augmented choir made to this grand old building.

Message from the Secretary: I found this lovely article in our weekend paper and thought you'd enjoy it.

PURITAN PLEASURE - SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT
Hands up, lads, if you have never sung in the bath. Yes, most of us males like a singsong from time to time, and quite a few may even be closet crooners at heart. We generally like music - some of us play air guitar, others have a go at karaoke after a pint or two. But, sadly, singing in choirs is a no-go area for many men, myself included.
Until 3 years ago, that is, when - despite some initial misgivings - I was persuaded to join the Dalesmen Singers, an eclectic mix of grey-haired men from darkest Yorkshire. This male-voice choir is well known locally and even tours abroad, and today I am more than glad that I joined them.
What is it about singing with the Dalesmen that gives me such pleasure? Sure, I like to belt out a good tune, but it's not just that. I confess to liking the choir's old-fashioned values - its sense of pride and togetherness, its ability to have fun - but again, that's not the whole story.
There is something unique about this group. This may be to do with its musical director, Steve, who is not only good at coaxing choir members out of the pub, but is equally skilled at coaxing sweet music from them once the pints have been downed. It may also have something to do with the intensely moving experiences we've shared, such as when we sang alongside a choir of ex-miners from Wombwell, near Barnsley.
On occasion it is the relationship between the choir and its audience that is special. Certainly, the singers respond to their listeners. When that lady in the front row appears to be about to swoon to the strains of "There is Nothin' Like a Dame", testosterone levels rise.
Yes, there is something about community singing - performing together with your mates - that runs deep. When the choir is really getting it together something happens. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up; you feel a tingle, a release. Perhaps this is what they mean by the rhythm of life.

AUGUST SPECIAL CONCERT for ST COLUMBA CELTIC
Sunday 13 August 2006 - 7.30 pm - St Issey Church. This is the date of St Columba Celtic's annual concert. It used to be held in a barn at Trewince Farm which was a popular venue, but insurance and health and safety have put paid to that. A spokesman for the choir says "This is a concert into which we put a special effort because it is the only concert in the year we organise for us. This year we will be accompanied by members of the fairer sex - The Richmond Singers who will be sharing the programme with us." Alison Harvey is the soloist and the proceeds will go towards our charity for the year, Children's Hospice South West.

Friday 28 July from 7.30 pm
The beautiful gardens and house of Prideaux Place, Padstow are to play host to 'An Evening of Cornish Music' on Friday, 28 July from 7.30 pm. We offer our grateful thanks to Peter and Elisabeth Prideaux-Brune for their kindness in allowing us full access fo the wonderful gardens.

SALTASH MALE VOICE CHOIR CLOSES
At a recent meeting of Saltash Male Voice Choir it was reluctantly agreed that the choir must close. With falling membership and the loss of Musical Director and accompanist, the closure of this once thriving choir, became inevitable.
The Federation is sorry to report this sad news and we know that all our membership will wish the members well. We are sure they will keep singing, perhaps joining other groups. Thank you Saltash, for the many years of pleasure your choir has given to the community, both locally and abroad.
A brief history of Saltash Male Voice Choir
The choir was formed in 1964. Initially the membership was small, but it grew steadily and after 20 years had reached a membership of 43 singers.
The choir has broadcast on local radio and competed successfully in several festivals including those at St Austell, Truro, Camborne, Roche, Plymouth, Porthcawl and Saltash. In 1966 and 1967 the choir won the Launceston Chamber of Trade Cup at the Launceston Music Festival and in 1968 gained joint first place with Wadebridge. In the same year it won the Indian Queens Festival and the West of England Cup at the Paignton Festival. In 1980 the choir gained second place in Class B (small choirs) at the St Austell Open Male Voice Choir Championships and in 1981 success was gained in both the Bugle and Launceston Music Festivals. In 1986 the choir won the Perpetual Shield for the Intermediate Class at the Roche Music Festival and gained third place in the Small Choir Section at the St Austell Open Championships. The overall cup for choirs was won twice, in 1992 and 1994, at the Saltash Music and Drama Festival.
Saltash Male Voice Choir has made a number of recordings, enjoyed exchange visits to choirs in Brittany and has taken part in all four Federation Concerts held at the Royal Albert Hall as well as the 'Voices for Hospices' concerts and other massed choir events.
To the end of 2005 Saltash Male Voice Choir was enjoying singing and giving pleasure to others, while helping to raise funds for various good causes.

REPORT BY ST AUSTELL MVC: Competitive Spirit between Male Voice Choirs at the 36th Camborne Music Festival, November 2005
It was Saturday the 19 November 2005, the place, the Centenary Chapel Camborne, West Cornwall, the event, Camborne's 36th music festival. St Austell Male Choir was entered into this - Daniel into the lion's den. We were going to sing in a competition in the heartland of Cornish choirs, and we wanted to win, not just take part. We had beaten West Cornish choirs before, but not in their own back yards.
The rules were simple: come out fighting with 3 own choice pieces of choral music. No punches pulled and sing your heart out boys. St Austell sang first in the intermediate class with Praze following. We started with a real test piece called I Sipsiwn or The Gypsy by William Mathias. This is a real Welsh piece intended as a test of male voice singing, with all the dynamics possible in one piece of music describing the life of a Romany Gypsy. There is light and shade, sudden and gradual, loud and soft, lagarto and accented passages. The second piece was The Gospel Train, another testing piece though not as a 'test' piece. The discords and tempo simulating a Wild West steam train, this piece builds up gradually - climaxing in a high-speed whistle and cloud of smoke and steam, finishing with a glissando of the chromatic scale - a modern and truly wonderful piece of gospel music. The third, the last and by no means least, piece of music was The Prayer of the Children. This song can only be described as a masterpiece. St Austell Choir have been singing this tear-jerker for some 4 or 5 years and we believe we are the only choir allowed by copyright to sing it in the country. The prayer of the children is one of those pieces of music that makes you think deeply of the happenings in the world. It was first written when the Bosnian crisis was raging, although the crisis was not restricted to Bosnia. It has comparisons with all conflict where children are the main victims. Everyone who hears it for the first time sits up and takes notice.
Praze gave a very creditable performance with 3 very well chosen and executed pieces of music. The resulting points reflected the degree of difficulty and quality of St Austell's performance and St Austell won in this class.
