Music is recognised to be at the very heart of Celtic Culture. Nowhere is this more so than in Cornwall and with our close cousins in Wales and Brittany. Here are opportunities to hear the acclaimed 'Mouezh bro Konk' Choir from the Concarneau Region of Brittany. In FALMOUTH, on THURSDAY 8 JULY at 7PM in the Chapel on the Moor, (and again on Friday 9th July in Marazion) Choir and Musicians will put on a performance of 'Isolde of Brittany', the concluding episode of the Tristan & Isolde story, in the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table which is common to both our countries. The two hour programme will be made up by the Mount's Bay Singers under the baton of Sheila Farmer. The Bretons have particularly asked to sing in Falmouth because of the strong Cornish/Breton twinning links in the towns of Falmouth, Penryn and Constantine. This is also an excellant opportunity for the many Cornish Choirs to hear the singing of our Breton Cousins at its best, and we are obliged to them, and to those in Cornwall who have enabled us to put on this concert free. In MARAZION on FRIDAY 9 JULY at 7PM, the Bretons will be on stage again, when they will be joined by Marazion Apollo, Musical Director, Tim Hosken, in the Community Centre for another free concert. Marazion was high on their list, not only because of the numerous local communities in Penwith twinned with Brittany (Penzance with Concarneau itself), but also because Marazion Apollo sang with Mouezh bro Konk during their visit to Brittany in October 2008. Please bring friends and family to support this 50-strong Choir on its first visit to Cornwall. Sent by Howard Curnow, Marazion Apollo MVC CORNISH MALE VOICE CHOIRS

Many male voice choirs are struggling to recruit younger singers. If we don't do something about it, choirs will disappear and our rich heritage of music making will be lost! A new Cornwall Community choir project is aiming to encourage people to take up singing as a hobby, then filter them through to choirs. If this project is supported and takes off, it can be of great benefit to our local male voice choirs, as well as other local choirs.
The project involves the setting up of several afternoon choirs initially in Penzance, St Ives, Hayle and Truro. Other groups will follow in Redruth, Camborne, Falmouth Newquay and Helston. The project leader, Neil Shepherd (MD of Newlyn MC and Laudate Chamber Choir) would like to hear from conductors and accompanists who may be interested in becoming involved in the project. He can be contacted on 01736 759944 or neilshepherd@yahoo.co.uk.

The Hermitage Ensemble consists of five male soloists who sing, accompanied only by one another. They are a very special choir. They sound like a Slavic barber shop quartet one minute and the massed ranks of the Red Army the next. Every choirmaster and every singer in the area should go and hear them because their sound and their musicality are quite unique. They are, as individuals, at home in the opera houses and concert halls of St Petersburg but they see it as the goal of their ensemble to maintain the Russian traditions of church music and folk music.
Their 2010 tour of Cornwall starts on 18 April and culminates with a concert in St Austell on 21 April. Other dates and venues in Cornwall to be confirmed.
The first half is serious stuff - starting with a sequence of Russian Orthodox religious pieces the first of which, ‘Praise the Lord from the Heavens’, is an extended ‘anthem’ by Bortnyansky, a contemporary of Beethoven and the founder of ‘modern’ Russian choral style. It establishes immediately the features and qualities that go on to thrill throughout the concert – most strikingly the arresting Russian vibrancy, resonance and intensity of expression which are maintained even in slow and hushed movements. After the interval, the mood changes. The rich tapestry of the Russian Folk tradition is expressed in a variety of exuberant and melancholy melodies. Only the balalaikas and Cossack dancers are missing.
The church in Russia was almost entirely suppressed during the communist period and the music was not sung (it never was accompanied by instruments) except privately. Reviving the tradition when the regime relaxed its control over culture must have needed much love and hard work. But the rites of the church and the churches themselves seem to be flourishing in modern Russia. The folk and national songs, on the other hand, became the pop music of the socialist times and were brought to the West by massive touring groups of The Red Army.
More about the singers can be found at Hermitage webpage where you can also hear samples of music: http://hermitage.seenworks.com

A Celtic Choral Celebration is to be held in Newquay on 9 April. Two superb YOUNG choirs are coming down from Wales to present an evening of choral music. One of the Choirs consists of a group of around 20 young men aged late teens - early 20s and the other is a mixed choir, similar size and similar age groups.
This will be an enjoyable event. Please come and encourage as many youngsters as possible to come along and be inspired by two superb quality choirs - both of which have won their sections at the Llangollen National Eisteddfodd and more!

The restoration of Truro Cathedral’s central tower and spire will directly benefit from a concert featuring some of the best male voice choirs in the county. Over the years the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs (CFMVC) has raised thousands of pounds for charities including the RNLI, Mount Edgcumbe, Children’s Hospice SW, Macmillan Nurses and St Julia’s Hospice.
The Federation, which was formed in 1983, has now generously set its aim on raising funds for the Cathedral’s Inspire Cornwall Appeal, including the restoration of the central tower and spire. The central tower which is now sheathed in scaffolding has just begun a year long project to repair and restore the weather damaged stonework of this iconic Cornish landmark. Terry Hodge, the CFMVC Chairman, said, “Each year we work extremely hard to raise money for worthy causes, and this year we are delighted to be able to help raise funds for the cathedral to help with its restoration project.”
On Saturday April 24th at 7.30pm the Cornwall Federation of Male Voice Choirs are holding a fundraising concert at Truro Cathedral that will feature four Federation choirs including St Stythians Male Voice Choir, Marazion Apollo Male Voice Choir, Newquay Male Voice Choir and Imerys Mid Cornwall Male Choir. The musical programme will include favourites such as What A Wonderful World, Kings of Swing, The Gospel Train, Speed Your Journey and Stand By Me. As well as the choirs the concert will feature two guest soloists; Maggie Holden and organist Donald Hunt (Organ Scholar at Truro Cathedral). (For further information on the Concert see news item below).
Truro Cathedral has hosted some great Male Voice Choir moments, most recently the Gala Concert of CFMVC in 2008 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Other highlights have included two BBC Songs of Praise programmes in 1992 and 2008 and a fundraising concert to raise funds for the Cathedral’s West front restoration in 2005.
Tickets £9 are available from the Hall For Cornwall tel 01872 262466 or online www.hallforcornwall.co.uk.

The members of Launceston Male Voice Choir have just finished recording their second CD and expect to have it available for sale at their joint concert with Nankersey Male Choir at Launceston Central Methodist Church on Sunday, 22nd November. Recorded at Central and at St Joseph's School, the CD takes its title from one of the tracks, "West of the Tamar," and contains 20 tracks altogether, including favourites such as Jacob's Ladder, Bobby Shaftoe and Nessun Dorma, and an organ solo by the choir's assistant musical director, Jonathan Mann. As with the first CD, £1 will be given to the Children's Hospice SW for each copy sold, and the new CD should therefore make a pleasing and worthwhile Christmas present.
About Launceston MVC
Launceston Male Voice Choir was formed in 1969, originally as Launceston Methodist Male Voice Choir. John Beare was one of the original members and was appointed deputy musical director in 1982 and has been principal musical director since 1986, now with Jonathan Mann as assistant musical director. Carole Baker has been the accompanist since 1998 and Barbara Uglow has been assistant accompanist since 2005. The choir now has a current membership of some 45 choristers and a repertoire extending to over 40 pieces which cover a wide variety of material ranging from traditional to modern. The members come from as far afield as Holsworthy, Bude and Bere Alston, but all have come to regard Launceston's Central Methodist Church as their home base and consider themselves fortunate to be able to use the hall for rehearsals every Wednesday evening.
The choir performs around 20 concerts a year, mainly in West Devon and East Cornwall, and also at private functions, such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, and at the Eden Project and in the bi-annual Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival. There is also an annual tour to other parts of the country. The choir and supporters have travelled to The Isle of Wight, Wales, Canterbury, Weymouth, Gloucester and Avon. For this year's tour, at the end of September, two coaches took about 90 choir members and supporters to Bristol, where they stayed in an excellent hotel in the heart of the city. On the way there on the Friday they stopped for lunch at Dyrham Park, a National Trust Property, and then on the Saturday were free to explore Bristol before performing a concert with Mendip Male Voice Choir to a capacity audience in St John's Church, Keynsham. On the Sunday there was a trip to Bath and then on the Monday the choir gave a lunchtime concert in St. Peter's Church in the beautiful setting of the grounds of another National Trust property, Stourhead. The trip was made all the more enjoyable by good weather on all four days.
Most of the concerts are for charitable causes and the forthcoming concert with Nankersey will raise funds to help combat Parkinson's Disease. With a renowned choir such as Nankersey joining with Launceston, and the delightful voice of the young soloist, Hannah Jackson, it promises to be an evening to remember. There are already strong links between the two choirs as Nankersey's musical director, Elaine Tangye, conducted The Trelawny Choir of approximately eighty choristers from male voice choirs throughout Cornwall and including ten from Launceston, on its tour of New Zealand two years ago.

What an amazing evening we shared with our friends the Forest of Dean Male Voice Choir on Saturday 24th October 2009 when we joined with them to raise funds for the Handstand Appeal. The audience was treated to a wonderful variety of songs from both choirs – some sacred, some secular, some accompanied, some unaccompanied. Whilst some of our songs were evocative of Cornwall and the surrounding seas, the Forest of Dean choir sang of their land between the rivers Severn and Wye.
It was such a happy occasion to which our own John Bennallick contributed in his wonderful inimitable fashion! The Forest of Dean MD – Tracey Gwynne conducted the joint choirs’ performance of “Speed Your Journey” and the concert ended with both choirs, under the direction of our Director of Music, Tony Tournoff, giving a rousing performance of Morte Criste. The accompanists were Hayley Marangon and Margaret Callaway.
At the close of the concert we were delighted to receive a commemorative plaque from the Forest of Dean MVC and we were pleased to present them with a pennant bearing our choir’s logo.
From the church in Pool, where we are thrilled to learn the concert raised £508 for the appeal, we headed to “Tricky Dickies” for the “afterglow”! It was so enjoyable and such fun that everyone had difficulty tearing themselves away. It was not until very late in the evening that, tired but elated, we went our separate ways.

It isn't strictly true that no MVC member has shown an interest in the Lev Kev programme. I attended an inaugural meeting in Newquay on behalf of Mousehole MVC. The impression I gathered was that the programme is primarily aimed at school teachers and getting children to sing.
I made it clear to the organisers that Mousehole MVC fully supported any moves to encourage children to sing and to this end we have ALREADY this year taken a group of 16 members into Mousehole Primary School; organised the Alan Simmons Choral Workshop to which all secondary schools in Cornwall and all primary schools in Penwith were invited; organised a joint concert with Schools in Penwith; and we are currently working with Humphry Davy School to organise further joint concerts. Angela Renshaw knows of our commitment to this cause.
At the Newquay meeting, I told Kath Matthews - who has close connections with Mousehole MVC - that we will do everything we can within our busy schedule to take singing groups into schools. We do not, however, feel that it would be particularly helpful for individual members to attend training sessions which are aimed at getting people interested in singing - it must be self-evident that our members are already interested.

Choir members and particularly Federation Reps, may remember when Angela Renshaw spoke earlier this year to the Federation Committee meeting. She introduced a new project she had received funding for through SING UP. (See archived news item dated 05/05/2009). This is now called Vocal Force - Lev Krev - in Cornish. It has been providing simple guidance and free training for community musicians and singers, many with no previous experience. It has been well received and is very well run.
But so far not one male voice choir or individual member has been along to any of the training. This is a great pity since many MVCs want to work in schools and this would have provided them with simple FREE tools to help them on their journey.
Attached below is LEV KREV's latest newsletter. On 21st Novemeber you will see that Chris Gray (Truro Cathedral) and Angela Renshaw (MD for Holman Climax and Cornwall Boys' Choir) will be leading a session based around the topic of boys' voices and singing which might be of interest.
Please share this information with friends and fellow singers.

St Stythians Male Voice Choir held its Annual Gala Concert at All Saints’ Church, Falmouth on Saturday 12th September singing to a capacity audience. Two guest choirs sharing the concert were the Beaufort Male Choir from Ebbw Vale, South Wales and a Norwegian male choir - the Fuglset Mannskor from Molde, a small town on the fjord coast of western Norway near Trondheim.
The Norwegian choir was taking a short holiday in Cornwall staying in St Ives. Happily the dates coincided with that of the St Stythians Gala concert. The Beaufort Choir stayed in Falmouth. The concert involved the three choirs singing their own programmes separately. They then combined to form a choir of 110 singers for two songs to close the concert. The compère was Andrew Lancaster.
During the interval, Terry Hodge, Chairman of the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs, presented certificates marking 45 years of service to Cornish choirs to Ken Downing and David Wilkin, Musical Director and Treasurer, respectively, of the St Stythians choir. Some of the wives of the Norwegian singers appeared in National costume, adding a splash of colour to the ranks of singers. The choirs celebrated this international exchange with an afterglow at the Falmouth Rugby Club.
A retiring collection raised £200 for Cornwall Hospice Care. The concert was sponsored by J C Williams (Furnishers) Ltd and Bowden’s Hardware, both of Helston.

Newquay Male Voice Choir were delighted to be invited to support the Fowey Regatta week by providing the entertainment for the opening (Sunday) evening concert in Fowey Parish Church. A mixed programme of entertainment was planned, with a range of music which was designed to suit a very wide audience.

A break with tradition was the way in which the various members made their way to the venue. The majority of choristers travelled by a coach which left Newquay in good time to get to the Church but a small group of enthusiastic basses, determined to be different, left Newquay on Sunday morning to travel via Mylor. It was all the idea of sailing enthusiast Nick Brown, who invited the group from the bass section to sail around to Fowey aboard his vessel “Solitaire”. A number of eyebrows in the port were then lifted, especially aboard the water taxi in Fowey harbour, as 5 members of the bass section of the choir were joined by baritone Billy Mander (who was formally made an “honorary bass” for the day) all in full dinner suits, approaching the town quay. “We were determined to approach this regatta concert – and the Parish Church in an appropriate manner – from the sea” said Rob Spowart who went on to compere the very successful and entertaining concert.
The group found a good wind after the Dodman Point and had made excellent time along the coast, in superb sailing conditions, passing a number of familiar towns and villages – more familiar to most of the crew from the landward side! Billy’s baptism into the bass section was complete when, clutching the bow line, he stepped off the boat, onto the pontoon (briefly) and into the water. Fortunately, after a shower onboard, he was little the worse for his involuntary dip and the audience at the concert was most impressed by his attempt to swim to the engagement! “You can never tell what they’re going to do next” said Judith Mumby, the choir’s relieved Musical Director who met the crew on the Town Quay in Fowey, along with Colin Terry (another NMVC bass who had also decided to sail to the engagement with another boat-owning friend).
Choir members were delighted with the reception which they received and the evening was completed as the sound of social singing floated across the harbour from a pasty-supper reception held at the Fowey Gallants Sailing Club.

From left to right: Phil Hitchens, George Bennetts and John Jackson
Three members of St Buryan Male Voice Choir have been presented with Certificates to mark their long service with the choir. The only founder member still singing with the choir from when it was established in 1941 is John Jackson, while the second longest serving member is Philip Hitchens, whose certificate records more than 40 years service. The ‘new boy’ of the trio is George Bennetts, with over 30 years to his name.
The certificates were presented at the Choir’s Annual General Meeting on 16th July by re-elected Chairman Steve Kettlewell who thanked all three recipients for their dedicated service to the Choir and for the example and inspiration they gave to newer members.
Steve also expressed the Choir’s thanks and appreciation to Diana Jenkins, standing down as President after nearly 15 years. Taking over as President will be Mr Jack Williams of St Levan, a long-time and keen supporter of the Choir, who received a warm ovation when he came along to the first practice-night after the AGM. Thanking the members for inviting him to become President he said how honoured he was to accept the position and that he felt he owed it to many old friends who had been associated with the Choir over the years, including the Choir’s first musical director Hugh Rowe, to do his best to help maintain the Choir in good health.
With Diana’s retirement, the Choir are looking for a replacement deputy accompanist to work alongside Norman Bunney. Anyone interested in this post (perhaps combined with singing in the Choir) is invited to call secretary Brett Farmer on 01736 811263.

The St Stythians Male Voice Choir (Director: Ken Downing) recently organised a concert with the City of Truro Male Choir at St Michael’s Church, Helston. The concert was in aid of Handstand, in support of Marshall Janson, the little boy who suffered a meningitis attack earlier this year. The Truro Choir (Director: Paul Triggs) gave its services free, reciprocating a visit of the St Stythians Choir to Truro last year for the Precious Lives Appeal.
Alison Harvey was the soloist and Bruce Taylor, of Miller Countrywide, was compère. The two Musical Directors assembled a programme that made the most of the excellent acoustics of St Michael’s Church.
Miller Countrywide supported the concert. The St Stythians MVC also wishes to acknowledge on-going sponsorship from J C Williams (Furnishers) of Helston.

After seven regional concerts, a BBC Songs of Praise broadcast and the second ‘Great Trelawny Challenge in aid of Children in Need’, the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs completed the celebration of their Silver Jubilee where it began with the recording of Songs of Praise, in Truro Cathedral.
On Saturday, 6th December a packed Cathedral audience were treated to a gala concert provided by a massed choir of over 100 voices representing 12, mostly of the smaller, of the 26 member choirs of the Federation. Four different Musical Directors, Judith Mumby (Newquay), Roy Wilton (Liskerrett), Phil Taylor (Burraton) and Tony Tournoff (St Columba Celtic) took the massed choir through a repertoire showing off all that is best in Cornish Male Voice Choir singing. With a selection of music from a wide range of genres, there was literally something for everyone. The soloist for the evening was international soprano, Rachael Garcia-Navarro (nee Hallawell) who, having grown up in Cornwall, is as proud of her heritage as the choirs. She used the acoustics of the Cathedral to full advantage in presenting an enthralled audience with nine pieces in all. Familiar pieces such as ‘Panis Angelicus’ (Franck) and ‘Oh Holy Night’ (Adam) were combined with less familiar items such as Bailero – Songs of the Auvergne (Cantaloube) and Del Cabello Mas Sutil (Obradors) to give an evocative programme full of interest and emotion. Also Rachael was joined by the choir in the singing of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ from Carousel.
Rev Professor Barry Jennings, President of the Federation, chaired the proceedings, at one point reminding everyone of the deep cultural roots of male voice choir singing as he told of an encounter with miners in South Crofty singing as they worked in the depths of the mine.

The Federation owes its origin to the need for choirs to communicate with one another ahead of the first massed male voice choir concert held in the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1983 and it has taken Cornish Male Voice Choirs back there on three more occasions since. At first it appeared natural that the Federation should once again return to the Albert Hall to celebrate its Silver Jubilee but times change and there was not the same will to have such an event as previously. Fittingly then the Federation made the decision to celebrate its milestone anniversary within Cornwall itself, offering people throughout the Duchy the opportunity to hear their favourite choirs in a festival of combined choir concerts in Saltash, Penzance, Launceston, St Just in Penwith, Liskeard, Newquay and Redruth. All member choirs, together with associate member, the Maesteg Gleemen Male Voice Choir, took part in an Anniversary event, singing over 100 different pieces. Proceeds from the concerts, including the Cathedral finale, will be disbursed between four charities, BBC Radio Cornwall’s ‘Precious Lives Appeal’ on behalf of Children’s Hospice South West, the Mission to Seafarers, the RNLI and the Federation itself. There is some final accounting to be done before the amount of these donations can be confirmed. However, each concert included the singing of that great Cornish song, Trelawny, with a special retiring collection in aid of Children in Need. These collections, together with contributions from those who participated in the synchronised event on November 7th, have raised over £5,000 for Children in Need! |
