DEPUTY MUSICAL DIRECTOR
and/or ACCOMPANIST/DEPUTY ACCOMPANIST
for NEWQUAY MALE VOICE CHOIR

Newquay MVC is looking for a Deputy Musical Director and/or an Accompanist/Deputy Accompanist to work with our Musical Director, Judith Mumby. Under Judith’s direction, the choir is developing an enviable reputation for the quality of its singing and the entertainment value of its programme.

For the right candidate(s), this role could include taking section practices and occasional full rehearsals and concerts. The choir would also consider applications from less experienced candidates who are interested in developing their accompanying or conducting skills. The musical team are supported by an enthusiastic and hard-working committee who are keen to see the choir develop still further in the future.

The post attracts an annual payment to cover expenses or an honorarium for duties undertaken. Choir rehearsals normally take place on Wednesday evenings at Claremont Church Hall in Beachfield Avenue, Newquay between 7pm and 9:30pm from September to July.

The choir is developing a popular and innovative repertoire which covers a wide range of styles and genres from classical, operatic, religious, folk, popular and modern as well as songs from the shows. Each year, between 12 and 20 public engagements are accepted with, often, invitations for bookings 2 years in advance. As a result, a great deal of money is raised for and with local charities and community groups.

DEPUTY ACCOMPANIST
for ST BURYAN MALE VOICE CHOIR

Following the retirement of their President and Deputy Accompanist, Diana Jenkins, St Buryan MVC is looking for a replacement Deputy Accompanist to work alongside their highly respected and evergreen Accompanist Norman Bunney. Norman is likely to be absent from the Choir for much of September and October while he has a new knee fitted, so the Choir is keen to find a new deputy as soon as possible.

Under the musical direction of Portia Grant, Great Britain’s most westerly Male Voice Choir is now performing as well as at any time since its formation in 1941, with membership growing and with enthusiasm and friendliness to match. The Deputy Accompanist will play an important and regular role in rehearsals (held every Thursday evening from 7.30 to 9.00 pm in St Buryan Village Hall), and in supporting and substituting Norman at concerts and other engagements. Whilst there is the potential for flexibility to suit the successful applicant, this is seen as a long term appointment with the potential for growth and development.

Anyone interested in this post (perhaps combined with singing in the Choir) is invited in the first instance to call Secretary Brett Farmer on 01736 811263.

DEPUTY MUSICAL DIRECTOR/CONDUCTOR
for Côr Meibion Clerwyr MAESTEG GLEEMEN MALE VOICE CHOIR

Applications are invited for the post of Deputy MD/Conductor of our admired Male Voice Choir.

This well established award winning Male Voice Choir from South Wales founded in 1958 seeks to appoint an experienced, enthusiastic and passionate musician to fill the post of Deputy MD/Conductor who is able to assist in the training and conducting of the 40 choir members.

The choir has a reputation for an innovative repertoire of variety and interest; therefore good musicianship is essential.

The Choir performs regularly throughout South Wales and travels the UK to concerts, competitions and festivals and has toured extensively overseas including Germany, Eire, Spain, Northern Ireland, Canada & USA. They are also no strangers to prestigious venues and in the past year performed at the Wales Millennium Centre – Cardiff, The Royal Albert Hall – London and the world famous Carnegie Hall – New York City.

This dynamic, forward-thinking choir is well regarded and respected within the local choral arena and is well-known for its quality singing and technical ability. Such is the popularity of the choir, bookings are often taken up to two years in advance.

The Choir's repertoire covers a wide range of styles and genres from classical, operatic, religious, folk, popular and modern as well as songs from the shows.

The Choir rehearses twice weekly in Maesteg and is an efficiently run organisation, undertaking in excess of 20 engagements annually.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong teaching and communication skill, with initiative and enthusiasm, and have the ability to be creative in their approach to choral music. They must be proficient in reading music and have experience with rehearsal technique and sight-reading. Whilst an aptitude to accompany on the piano is useful it is not essential. The ability to work in harmony with the current Music Team and Choir is vital; flexibility and adaptability are key features of this role.

The choir has a supportive committee, keen to build a relationship with the Music Team and be involved in planning the musical programme for future events. The choir believes there is always still much to achieve and with an enthusiastic, dynamic leadership we can do this together.

The appointment of a Deputy MD/Conductor will mean spreading the workload and therefore they will be expected to attend a certain percentage of engagements/rehearsals. Consequently they will be expected to keep up-to-date with the Choir's current repertoire.

An attractive remuneration is on offer commensurate with the applicant's experience and qualifications. Initially, the post is for 2 years with a probationary period of 6 months.

Applications are invited from both ladies and gentlemen by CV, with details of two referees and a covering letter of not more than one A4 sheet of paper, highlighting key details of your conducting experience, musical leadership, and your approach to directing male voice choir singing. We hope to learn how you would assist our present MD/Conductor and help develop our choir and why you think you meet the particular needs of the choir.

The successful applicant is expected to be in post by 1st September 2009.

The deadline for applications is Friday 31 July 2009. Interviews and selection will take place during August 2009.
